Forest Bathing on Winner Creek Trail





This morning we took our last hike on Winner Creek Trail that is located in a beautiful boreal forest behind the Alyeska Resort. Boreal forests are characterized by spruce, pine, larch, ferns, mosses and lichens. Kailey and Lauren told us we would be doing some "forest bathing" as we hiked down to the gorge. 





The walk was so still and green - so beautiful!





The final capstone of our hike was seeing a mama moose with her twin babies. We were thrilled as we had hoped all week to have a moose sighting. We told Kailey and Lauren they were truly the "Dream Team" as leaders for "arranging" this final surprise!

Dreaming of Alaska

  Last fall, we started talking about creating a goal for ourselves to keep working on our fitness over the long winter. We knew we had Dave & Jordan's wedding in early July, so it seemed like having a hiking trip later in July would serve a dual purpose. 24 Hours to Homer, Alaska

We flew from Minneapolis to Anchorage and then stayed overnight near the airport. The next day, we basically hung out near the airport until late in the afternoon when we took a small plane to Homer (when you checked in, they asked you how much you weighed :-) Homer is nestled  on the shore of Kachemak Bay, a funnel-shaped fjord 40 miles long and 24 miles wide in the Cook Inlet region of south central Alaska.   Homer is the  Halibut Fishing Capital of the world and the evidence of commercial and tourist fishing is everywhere.  Once we finally arrived in Homer about 24 hours after we left Minneapolis, we did some exploring and then ate some dinner. We saw the Seafarer's Memorial with names of so many lost at sea - a good reminder of how difficult and dangerous commercial fishing can be.  This morning when we got up, the clouds had lifted and we got our first glimpse of the mountains.  The fishermen were all heading out for their days' work.  We meet up ...
