Dreaming of Alaska

Last fall, we started talking about creating a goal for ourselves to keep working on our fitness over the long winter. We knew we had Dave & Jordan's wedding in early July, so it seemed like having a hiking trip later in July would serve a dual purpose. We could motivate ourselves to keep going to fitness classes and doing some training all winter long as well as look our best for the wedding festivities!

So as we started brainstorming about what kind of hike might work in mid July, we thought of Alaska. Alaska was on both of our bucket lists PLUS a destination that you want to travel to in the summer. Thus, the concept of an Alaska "hiking adventure" was born.

Well, like many goals, our dream of being perfectly trained for this hike didn't exactly happen. However, just knowing that we committed to this hike helped keep our training going all winter long, even if it wasn't at the highest level.

We had an amazing wedding weekend! And now we are ready to leave for our Alaska hiking adventure. We are traveling with a small group through the organization Backroads for the first 6 days of hiking, and then we are off on our own to hike in Denali National Park.

Due to the notorious Alaska mosquitos, we spent time spraying our boots, socks, pants, and shirts with the repellent permethrin.

We fly to Anchorage later today then tomorrow, we'll take a small plane to Homer, Alaska. The adventure begins!

  1. I've traveled with Backroads before- they are awesome! Have a wonderful trip and watch out for those Grizzly bears!

  2. So smart to infuse your clothing to ward off pests. Of course it does not work on brown bears & I am sure you have some strategy for them! Stay healthy and congrats on taking this adventure.
